What is ONC?
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The ONC was created to develop a Health Information Technology (HIT) infrastructure at a national scale. The ONC primarily aims to:
- improve coordination between hospitals, labs, physicians, and other organizations
- promote the early detection, prevention, and management of chronic illnesses
- improve healthcare quality
- make it more cost-effective
- while ensuring personal health records (PHR) remain secure
Furthermore, the ONC governs policy coordination and strategic planning to adopt Health IT and Health Information Exchanges (HIE), the eHealth Exchange (formerly known as the Nationwide Health Information Network).

How ONC Benefits Healthcare Professionals and Patients
An ONC-certified healthcare application is one that has been tested by third-party laboratories for the most rigorous Health IT requirements. Therefore making ONC a benchmark by which healthcare organizations and professionals could decide on which application to buy. Implementing an ONC-certified application also allows healthcare organizations to directly receive their Medicaid incentive payments rather than depending on Medicare payment adjustments. As more ONC healthcare applications are adopted, patients will benefit from improved healthcare services and enhanced privacy.
About our Client’s Application
The application is a consumer-facing portal that connects patients to their healthcare providers through a user-friendly, secure solution. The portal also provides consumers convenient access to clinical and personal information. The solution promotes collaboration between the consumer and healthcare provider, by allowing the individual to actively participate in their health plan and recovery.
